eBay has something that may be useful for hams. It is made by Associated
Research and was used as a hi pot tester for hospital equipment. I think
some of the models may not do all of the testing now required, and may be
obsolete for that purpose - which makes them affordable.
Look at 2583364671. The price is very low right now, although I am not sure
what it will end up at. This is not mine, but I have a similar one I am
planning on using. It is a 0-2500 vac tester. The trip out is in ma. What
it does have that could be useful is a variac and a 2500 volt transformer.
Using an external 1/2 wave voltage multiplying circuit (tripler or
quadrupler), this would work for a hi pot tester. Although you could easily
attach an external volt meter, the ac meter can be multiplied by the dc
multiplier, since no current will be drawn by the circuit.
A few of the 0-3000 volt units made by the same company were donated to a
local scouting organization and I will be selling them with manual copies to
raise funds for a scout hamshack. I will sell them for $40 each with copies
of the manual. If the eBay item sells for less than $40, I will drop the
price. I would prefer that a few hams get these units rather than putting
them on eBay.
I think these items sell on eBay from time to time and may be affordable.
However, I have seen the same unit listed on eBay with a starting price of
$500, so beware that prices vary greatly.
