I am one of the peculiar group who still do, simply because I enjoy it and I cant afford to go out and buy what I want as the quality is more or less rubbish if it comes in from Japan. Build it yourself and you know what goes into it and essentially how it works!

Regarding the use of 4CX 250's in linears, one of the possible constraints might be the costs associated with the purchase of the appropriate sockets to go with them.
The tubes are realistically priced (surplus that is) but the sockets seem to be out of all proportion to them and the cost of buying them new is unbelieveable.
