Depends on which diodes... and how reliable you wish the resulting
unit to be...

I have that book in hardcopy and don't recall seeing any info regarding
the operation of diodes in series. Whereas, their 1961 "Silicon Zener
Diode & Rectifier Handbook" covers the topic at length (sec 8.4, pp
124-130) and explains why equalization is good practice for several
reasons.
