That's not true. It's what you have them in that matters.

Devices no. Systems for protection, can work reasonably well. But the 
rise time of the pulse is fast (fall is slower), so the bandwidth is 
large. So its next to impossible to protect a sensivite front end, since 
you can't filter it in any way without impacting on the performance of 
the system.

If you are paranoid, then store equipment in a metal box when not in 
use, which is all the original poster asked about. It will be safe in a 
metal box.

Personally, I think its a bit of a waste of time. You would swap a very 
very very small risk (EMP damage) for a smal to moderate risk (dropping 
it while moving it). Not too sensible in my mind.
