I'd echo Will's suggestion:
http://www.communication-concepts.com/application_notes.htm and work 
through AR 305/313/347 for starters. I wouldn't want to discourage 
anyone from experimenting, but transformers that don't work can cost you 
a lot of transistors very quickly and the problems go up exponentially 
with power. You can do a lot worse than use something someone else has 
proven.
