This used to be pretty common, but isn't really good design because
the metal shell of a 6L6 is not thermally connected to the anode
except by radiation. If you've ever cut open a metal 6L6, you'll see
the innards are enclosed in a small glass tube which floats inside
the shell - a far cry from a true external anode tube.
Back when we were teenagers it was pretty impressive none the less. :-)
