Yup, they sure can still couple being in a straight line. The coupling is
weaker the farther aprat they are, but how much it takes to fully decouple one
from another, I don't know. Mounthing the sections at 90 degrees does de-couple
them. It works the same as a grid dip meters coil. It has to be parallel to the
coil to be any good, not at 90 degrees. Parallel means it's coupled to it and
that the flux is cutting through both coils. I've mounted power transformers at
right angles if the had to be mounted close together.
