Clint is right. A machinist once told me that it is common to not put enough
force on the drill. If you are not making chips you need more pressure. A
drill which is not cutting is overheating, particularly if it is turning too
fast. It really helps if you use cutting oil on the bit. This smells like
sulphur and is available many places. 73, Dan, N5AR

To drill a 1/2" hole, start with a smaller size and work up in size.  The
smaller drills will often have a much easier time with the harder material
due to less heat build up.  As you step up the actual cutting area remains
small, also reducing the heat.

        Is there one among us who is a master machinist??
       I need someone who can tell me *exactly* what type of drill bit it
  will take to drill thru a steel plate, 3/8 in. thick, Very hard (altho
  hardness is hard to verify) A 1/2 in. Cobalt drill couldn't,touch it.!!!
  So , how do I drill that plate ??
     I'll give you any more info I have ( which isn't much)
