#12 is just fine. It's rated for 20A, and there will be relatively 
little IR drop in such a short length. 

You MUST, however, pull a dedicated safety ground (green wire) with 
that line, and connect it to the third (round) pin on the outlet and 
to the ground bus in the breaker panel.
