Measure the voltage regulation of that method when you drive 
the amp with rated drive power and most people's opinion 
will change. It's a crummy system at more than a few watts.

As the base is driven with RF it tries to move negative. In 
order for the bias to remain anywhere near to stable the 
current through the diode has to be at least ten times the 
peak base current. You'll fry that little 1N5408 trying to 
get that much current in any amp that runs more than a few 
mA of base current.
