I have also seen these microwave transformers draw a lot of primary 
current with no load connected to the secondary, a lot more, in the 
order of 3 to 5 amps..I know a ham who rewired the secondary for a 
lower voltage
to use for a high current 12vdc power supply and he left this power 
supply running 24 hours a day, when he discovered the current draw on 
the primary he started turning the power supply off and it made a 
huge difference in his electrical bill every month...Skip, VE6BGT..
