Except on receive, if the preamp is at the RX. If the preamp is between 
the antenna and the power amp, I agree that loss between the transmitter 
and the power amp doesn't matter. 

Shielding should not be an issue for any reasonable coax unless your 
shack is AWFULLY noisy.
