In Fredrikstad--a nearby city here,- there was a 500KW SW TX using a large
logperiodic rotatable
array. When they were beaming towards the road nearby - all kinds of strange
things
happened to cars passing by. This was some years ago and electronics in cars
were just at the birth.
My friend had a car where the only electronic thing onboard was a windscreen
wiper controller.
And this went crazy when he got "struck by the main lobe" at considerable
distance.
The car was japanese....and the controller was made in Japan....
Other stories heard include direction lights, transistor ignition systems
and the like. But RF fields were
tremendous !! Street lights were often modulated quite far away :-) and in
some rooms at the hospital
a couple of kilometres away lights were flickering when switched off. I
stayed there a few nights and that
light over the bed kind of made me feel ok :-) I thrive in good RF-fields
:-)

At the scenic overlook on Sandia Crest, over Albuquerque, there is a
warning sign about the RFI levels affecting car alarms. In 2008, I
drove my Jetta there with friends, and the keyfob was unable to unlock the
car due to the RF levels, manual key worked of course.
About 200 feet from the parking lot are short towers with radiators for
analog ch 2, 4, 5, 7 and 13, plus UHF stations. Now there are only 7 and
13 on VHF at lower TX power
while the rest moved to UHF allocations. I haven't been back to see if my
key works, but since key fob is on 433 MHz or so, I imagine it will get
'blanketing' interference still.
BTW, there is a LOT of speculation floating around about Toyota engine
computer and RFI, and that's all it is .... speculation, until proven on a
test range. I wouldn't put any money
on that being the problem however. My 2003 Tacoma is drive by wire, too, a
steel wire that goes from the pedal to the throttle body.....
