Vic:

The slightest little arc in the tube, the tiniest
little gassy discharge kind of event, would
instantly destroy a series pass transistor.

Instantly.

I would think a shunt device (with a series
ballast from the power supply) could be
designed with added elements to withstand
such an arc. Added elements here would
mean over-voltage protection, probably a
variation on a Zener. Maybe just a Zener.
A pulse of current from the tube anode
might be more difficult to guard against.

In any case I think it would be more difficult
to correctly protect a series solid-state device.

Tubes have their place and a 6L6, a 6Y6,
6B4, whatever might prove to have a longer
life in the real world.
