In the "goode olde dayes", a lot of amateur radio operators did not even own an 
SWR bridge!

If the transmitter could "load" the antenna, and if one made contacts, then 
everything was good!  If either thing was not present, then one made changes 
either to the antenna or the transmitter until contacts were made.

Bill, 

My first rig in 1954 was a surplus ART-13 and a BC-348. The ART-13
would tune most anything, including the bed springs. 

Efficiency...SWR...what was that?? :):)
