I have seen USB transmission pairs isolated by fiberoptic cable (you pick
the length).   Proper bonding and interconnected single point grounding
critical but not sure why Jim says not to use MOV's as additional
protection.

1) Proper bonding!
2) Get power for all interconnected equipment from mains power outlets that
either share the same green wire, or whose green wires are bonded together
at the outlets.
3) NEVER use MOV outlet strips or other MOV devices.
