Several people have reported problems trying to FTP to N6ND.NOSC.MIL. In some
cases, using the IP address will work. It's 128.49.212.3, Tree's program is in
N6TR-LOG subdirectory. 73

I totally agree with N4TY/N4AR that neglecting QSLs costs contest
QSOs.
The K4VX station has received many thousands of bureau cards that go
unanswered. While much of the bureau QSLing is ridiculous, and
people send cards for every single contact year after year, I notice
an appreciable drop in our rate/total QSOs. A drop especially
noticeable in JA QSOs. We at VX have debated this for years. VS6WO
points up how difficult it is for JA contesters to do well. N9KAU
points out how JA's have little room for antennas, and most do not
run amps. What this tells me is that every contact for the average
JA op is important. Conceivably the only MO contact for many of
these guys may be with a large station like K4VX--especially on the
low bands.
Whether the drop in JA QSOs is attributable to low interest in Japan,
or the lack of QSLs from K4VX is also debatable. I just know that we
are losing QSOs with established stations because they figure we
don't care about them, why should they continue to give us QSOs?
When we use different calls from VX (WO0G, WX0X, NS0Z) we get better
JA rates. My best JA runs from Lew's came using WO0G. I QSLed
everybody. Too bad I changed that call! NOT.
In defense of Lew--he does QSL every card that has return postage.
He cannot afford to QSL everyone else--especially not every QSO. We
discussed doing a one-time mailing that answered all bureau cards.
All these guys would go into a database, and they would never receive
another card on the same band. After we concluded that we would have
to spend a minimum of One year answering cards, entering data, and
packaging cards, we told Lew to put up some more towers.
I say if you can keep up, QSL everybody. Guys use the bureau because
they cannot afford directly QSLing every US state for 5BWAS. I
guarantee that guys put cards on the wall, and truly appreciate the
time we take to help them--and they continue to call-in in contests.
*We are fortunate there is no US to US QSL bureau, or we would really
be inundated!*

PS K8YSE is exactly right. We cannot contest without the casual
ops/award hunters. Except for the Sprint.
