Subject: SS and CW filters.
When the bands are crowded, even with a 500 Hz filter you often just
can't hear anyone who is even a little outside the bandpass because of
the QRM. It's frustrating when you manage to find a relatively quiet
500 Hz slot, then can't copy the station calling you because he's just
outside the slot, where someone very loud is calling CQ. So, it's
also important to make sure you can accurately zero-beat the station
you're calling.

Our campus club W5EHM did SS this weekend, or at least that was
the idea. I was the only op who showed up all weekend and I
can't get excited working Ws all weekend, so I stopped at exactly
400 Qs. Didn't even make a sweep - missed KL7, Maine and PQ.
Heard two PQs on 40, one answering someone else, the other (VO1MP)
3 layers deep and unworkable at the time. Adrenaline flowed when
I was called by an NL7 but it was in AZ. Never heard ME. Found
VE8RCS weak and watery about 20 mins into the contest on 20m, after
working it I stayed around to see how big the pile would get, but
nobody called in the following 8 mins. Must have been one hop
from NWT to STX.
Almost missed PAC - only worked an N6 there, and the NH6 I worked
was a domestic one. Apologies for an apparently poor signal on
15 on Sunday - someone on the reflector confirmed what some kind
soul told me on the air, by sitting on my freq and sending "bad
keying" for some minutes (thanks, not). Will try to track that
down.
Paper dupe sheets filled up with 6s and 7s too soon, stopped
calling those after I'd worked all sections... thanks to all
for the QSOs. The other club members can do the 'phone one!

The only reason I am posting this is to apologize to all you good ops who
struggled to work me in the contest. I was just there for a few Q's to warm
up for ARRL SS phone, as my time was limited due to family commitments
I wanted to keep. After jumping into the fire, I realized that my recent
inactivity in the last few years in SS CW had reduced my CW skills to
copying simply callsigns and 599 14 or 15 in CQWW. So, I tried to hang
in and make more than the 100 or so planned QSO's (remember: I am the
single operator DISTRACTED category? tm ). Many thanks to all you who
repeated numbers or checks!
Results:
WB4iUX, SOD category
hours of operation: about 8 (lots of time spent listening for mults and
operating practices -- several ops rate AWESOME in my book)
TS690s, SB220, 80m 1/4 wave sloper, 40m 2 ele yagi, 20m 3 ele yagi
(40 was indeed "long" this weekend!)
Q's: 313
mults: 68
(missed VT [had 3 or 4 NH's though!], N. Fla [how???], Miss.,
Nev [double how???], ND, Neb., VE2, VE5, VE8 [curse of not being on
during Saturday's better conditions])
Comments:
1. Shocked to hear 1 op come back to my CQ with "pse copy number"...
on CW -- I thought Field Day wasn't until this summer. Oh well, I have
no room to talk.
2. I didn't understand why 2 non-48-contiguous-state stations were not
signing /7. I guess you don't "have" to, and I guess they figured by not
signing /7 they would get more attention. Would somebody please
advise me on this. I know in some contests (WPX maybe?), if you are
portable you are required to sign portable.
3. Same as number 2, except a 48-contiguous-state station was handing
out PAC section but not including NH6/KH6/WH6 in his callsign.
I would think this would have drawn MORE attention to his efforts.
4. Glad to hear W4BTZ with 700 or 800 Q's and W4YDD with 400 or
so on Sunday making sure everyone had an SC QSO on CW. W4YDD
probably doesn't remember, but he welcomed a very-wet-behind-the-ears
teenager into his shack/home in North Myrtle beach about 24 years ago
and let him experience the fun of DX contesting and see that antennas
are what make the grade. He had a 3 element quad for 20/15/10 and
phased verticals on 40...I could hear and work Europe on 40!!!
A M A Z I N G !!
Comments 2 and 3 are not meant to be flames, just questions. I plead
the fifth on number 1. Of course, I'm sure I'll be flamed because I had to
send "nr xxxx" to start my exchange due to my rustiness!

My surprise was how many people called me 100 - 300 Hz high! I was
constantly on the RIT just to keep them in the bandpass. (500 Hz filter
plus narrowed skirts with the TS-850 variable passband). Of course this
took me right into BIG signal next to me.

Didn't hear ANY but the contest gods teased me with a WL7/1 answer to my CQ.

Thought I had a real chance at a sweep when I busted the VE8RCS pile. The
