        Good luck. My dealings with HQ have taught me that
        they are a publishing business, not a voice for you or 
        me. It's the 90's and like most big operations, they 
        have an answer (probably stored somewhere as a Macro)
        for everything. But it won't be the one you were hoping
        for...

        In the meantime, I've found other sources for contesting
        and dx-related information. And that I have QST to thank
        for!

      I have found that the products produced by TCE Laboratories, 2365 
 Waterfront Park Drive, Canyon Lake, TX 78133,  phone: (210) 899-4575
 are first rate.   The owner, Tom Bruce, WA5???, is sometimes a bit slow 
 on delivery, but the phone does not receive interference under any 
 conditions at all, period!
 
      His model TPXL-D is a standard touchtone without any bells and 
 whistles, sells for $59.95.   Any complaining neighbor of mine gets one 
 from me for free as long as they can prove that I'm really bothering them 
 and it's not just an attempt to get a free phone.  It has dried up all my 
 RFI complaints and I now operate in any contest I wish in blissful peace!
 Well worth the expense!
 
      Bruce's phones were among those used by the FCC in their famous RFI 
 test.  His proved to solve RFI problems about 98% of the time.

I wonder if there is an ftp site somewhere that has files of antenna 
models for the common commercial antennas? I'm considering purchasing 
ELNEC or EZNEC but understand it is a time consuming process to model the 
antenna. Surely someone has already done it... What say?

Subject: Results of Alpha 87A Survey

Tnx to all who replied to my query about the 87A. I had 19 replies of which
13 were from 87A owners. All but one were happy with the amp's performance.
The lone dissenter has had his back 4 times in 2 yrs.

The PIN diode failure problem seems to have disappeared. The most common
"soft" failures in operation are due to high SWR/reflected power followed by
high, low or fluctuating line voltage. Five used the 781/87A combination and
reported no problems.

So it appears that if you can keep the SWR below 2:1 the 87A should do the
job. By the way there were several comments about lousy customer service
from ETO, which unfortunately is nothing new.

Sorry I can't print all the comments but I get charged by the word! Tnx
again to all who responded, it looks like it's an 87A for me.

....yeah, sure - someone can give you the results for the commercial
antennas already "done"....but, at least for me, the fun part is playing
with those manufacturer's designs - treating them as "raw material" only. By
varying element lengths and/or spacings to improve upon their design - or,
better yet to make the antenna what you want it to be...most beams
commercially are designed to be everything for everyham - I like CW and all
my antenna models are maximized for "025"...they are (hopefully) very loud
at say 14025, and I don't care about 14250 - I can see through the modeling
software how I can get my gain improvement, perhaps at the sacrifice of
bandwidth...or conversely YOU pick another parameter and maximize for it (it
could be f/b or impedance...or it can be all of these, you are in control,
just push the buttons on your '486 and smile)

....elnec IS very hard to use, but the results are frighteningly
powerful...you may want to start off with a simpler program like K4VX's or
YAGINEC to get your feet wet....it is a little like the teenager who starts
by innocently smoking a joint at first, then finds himself with tracks up
and down his arms....like drugs, antenna modeling programs are very
addictive.

....And it is true what they say about the antenna modeling programs - they
are great at helping you win contests; you just get one in the hands of your
competitor, and he will be a slave to his computer for weeks or maybe months
as he learns and enjoys the modeling programs - and look out if you are "AR"
- as in Anal Retentive! (sorry, John) It is 2:30 AM and you will find that
you can take things a little too far very easily...as in optimizing that
GAIN by tenths of a dB with iteration after iteration of a design, designs
where you just added a quarter inch to an element! (BUT IT IS BETTER! I'LL
DO IT AGAIN - you laugh now)
                              
....software for yagi antenna design is like CT/NA/TR logging software is to
CONTESTING; once you use it you won't go back to the pencil and paper again.
My first experience with the designing of a yagi optimized via computer
modeling has been VERY successful, and I am anxious to do it again...
