I'm certain that within the recent past somewhere I saw an article about the
classic coax RF choke/balun so often recommended for yagis. I believe it
concluded that less turns was better. I also know that some believe that the
coiled coax should not be layered but kept in a single layer to isolate one
"end" from the other, contrary to what is usually done.
I'd appreciate knowing if anyone has a reference to the article, and if
anyone can confirm the single layer coil business.

My brief two cents on the subject:
I think we are seeing the result of the computer revolution siphoning off
the technically curious that had traditionally entered amateur radio. This
started in the mid 70's and continues today. I also see the Internet and
the World Wide web as competitors to HF in the neophytes eyes. The lure is
that the WWW doesn't require a license and is about 10% of the cost of
putting up a modest sized low power station with a tower.
I know this is what happened to me. I started into amateur radio 20 years
ago and got side tracked into computers. I did everything from local BBS's
to being a sysop for AOL. Now I am ready to try amateur radio again.
The other thing that is deterring significant participation is the
extremely restrictive zoning and deed covenants, or, in the case of
apartments or trailer parks, management restrictions, that cover most of
the housing in this country. You can probably slip in something for six
meters, two meters, or higher but you can't even think about a three
element tribander. So if we do get them into the hobby, they have very
limited incentive to upgrade because they can not effectively exercise
their new privileges.
IMHO the only way to get new contestors is to take the SOB's (Shack On Belt
- I am one of them) and get them involved with a contest effort. I know
that is what got me hooked - now if I could just quit working 80 hours a
week and had time to upgrade.

Now we need to find the conduit to the media...I know a few freelance

It might actually translate better these days as a TV piece.
If anyone is gonna pick up this thread and run with it, I would suggest
contacting the WRTC gang in SF, ie
W6OAT, W6QHS, K3EST and finding the media guy for the event...seems like a
natural tie in.

Just talked to the Kenwood Service Center in Long Beach.
It sounds as if the radio was dropped; the right end sustained
the damage. The guy was reading about the damage from
a computer screen; he had not actually seen the rig, but
he read off the damage as including: sub-af gain,
notch, cw pitch, af and rf gain, and slope tuning; these are
all the radio controls on the right end (as viewd from
the front), Sure sounds to me like it fell, or was dropped
and landed on that end of the box. So UPS filed a report/
claim number: 431 0368. Would be interesting to see the
box, and its' damage to determine how the radio, surrounded
by styrafoam peanuts, and wrapped in a water tight bag, had
the force transmitted on to it. I have shipped many times from
Kauai via UPS, as well as received all my shack gear
and both computers via UPS, and never has a box even
looked touched and certainly never any damage.
The guy at Kenwood says it is now between me and UPS
to determine responsibility; sounds like I don't have much
chance. UPS statement to Kenwood is that the box was
"inadequately packed"; guess they figure it should withstand
being dropped off a belt or by a man carrying it, to the concrete
floor, or whatever, and survive. Well the UPS guy at Lihue seemed
satisfied, after he cut the box open, added packing and then sold
me the insurance. So what is the insurance for,
who stands behind the insurance? Sounds like it is pointless to
buy it if it doesn 't pay to fix a shipping accident or replace a
several thousand dollar radio. The fellow at Kenwood had no
estimate of the cost of repair, but he thought that one was provided
to UPS.

I have had many dinners with John Dorr at Dayton. He eats the same cheap
Chinese food that I do. I've only recently met Rich Moseson, NW2L, the
editor of CQ VHF but he does not look like a big spender, either.

I thought Bob Cox went to Bonaire not Aruba. As one who has known him
since we were both graduate students at the University of Maryland, I can
tell you that he lives a very frugal existance -- I would readily grant

Figured this is the best place to ask this...
One of my original 25 year old Eimac 3-500's finally died shortly after the
start of the CQ WW last month. I want to buy a new pair soon but I have
been hearing stories that Eimac tubes are not really made as well as they
used to be... and I may be better off buying Amprex tubes instead.
RF Parts has both for the same price.
To further complicate things, they (RF Parts) claim that the quality of the
foreign 3-500 has greatly improved over the past couple years and they offer
a better warranty with them.. at almost $100/pair cheaper than the Eimac.
So, which ones would I be better off with? They will be used in a SB-220.
Are these new 3-500ZG worth the extra money?
