De N2AA ..... Please forgive me -
I know that this does not belong here, but I
cannot ignore it. It is very important for
every chance to be taken that someone with
useful assistance or advice to offer will see
it.

5 years ago some contesters (and other hams)
were involved in trying to obtain emergency
Leukemia medicine for the son of UA9CDC, who
is one of the ops at the UZ9CWW contest club
station. Pete Rhodes, K4EWG, purchased a month
supply of chemotherapy drugs and hand carried it
to Russia in a picnic cooler packed with dry ice.
Treatment for the boy's Leukemia was finally
done in England, and there was a complete
remission after 6 months, which has lasted
until now.

I am transmitting Igor's plea on behalf of his
son, in hopes that someone with experience or
knowledge of such things will offer advice.
The problem is funding a bone marrow transplant.
We are in the process of contacting local
agencies (NY/NJ) for advice.
I know that if it were my child, faced with
no other practical options, I would broadcast
it far and wide without restraint.

Subject: HELP!!!

Dear Eugene,
I have got a very bad news. My son Eugene, RU9CZD , 9 years old, has relapsed.
I am going to take him to Germany for treatment for 3 months.
This treatmen is free because of the invitation from Prof. Lampert
from Giessen Univercity but that is only a preparation for bone marrow
transplant from unrelated donor which is required to save him. Bone marrow
transplant can be done in 3 month time in England.
The cost of the operation is 50 000 USD. The operation is not done in Russia
at all. I now have to raise 50 000 USD to save my son. I appeal to all
my friends to help me. I am really determined to do everything possible
and more. He is my only son and I love him so much. If you can do anything
to help I beg you to do so. May be you can put my appeal into some newspaper.
Or may be you can start fund-raising campaign amongst your partners and
clients. Or may be you can find out about some charities that can help me
to pay for Eugene's treatment. Or hospital in the USA that can do the
operation as a charity. So far I am thinking about England because the
cost of treatment is much less there then in the USA although the operation
can be done in the USA as well (as far as I know that will cost over 100 000
USD). Any help will do.
Please let me know your thoughts. Do you think it is acceptable to put
my appeal in CQ contest reflector? I am thinking about it. I am leaving
for Germany 2-3 of April
because it is important to immediately continue tratment that doctors has
already started here. My friend Mike UA9CIR will use my e-mail address to be
able to answer all the questions. His phone number is 3432 274558.
Nick RZ9CN will also be aware. His e-mail address now is
root@test.pssr.e-burg.su
and his phone number is 3432 473772. They both speak English.
Eugene Shadrin is available at 3432 324212 and he has
fax on the same number. I will let them know my phone number in Germany
when I get there.
I include here a fax from Dr. Stevens of Manchester Children's Hospital
who treated Eugene for leukaemia in 1991 when my son was originally
diagnosed. His telephone is (44)161 7944696, fax 161 7945929.

Dear Igor,
Many thanks for your latest fax. I will do my best to answer your questions
as objectively
as possible and try and give you some of the information you require.
1) Do they do unrelated BMTs in Germany? The answer is I don't know exactly,
but from the past experience of the Germans I expect the answer is relatively
few. I list some transplant centres below together with contact names.
I have. spoken to Andrew Will (you may remember him) who is our Ttansplant
Director and certainly he would be willing to consider Eugene. assuming
he goes back into remission.
The costs of an unrelted BMT at Pendibury would be in the region of 30,000. As
far as
I know other centres in the UK are at least as expensive as this and
certainly in the USA the figure is likely to be much more.
2) As regards finding a donor. I would suggest that the UK donor panels will be
probably as good as any as they are large (>300.000 donors) and made up in
the main of Caucasions. A search could however also be done via the
International Registry.
3) I think that Eugene's treatment in Germany will be complementary as
whatever happens, he must be in a good remission and probably requires
some form of intensification treatment. I would say. however. that Eugene
needs to be tissue typed (ie HLA A. 13 and Dr type) without too much delay
so that a bone marrow donor search can be started.
4) I would suggest that if an unrelated BMT is to be performed then it would
be preferable if it were done within 6 months of relapse. Some transplants
have been done after this, but I see little point in waiting beyond a year
if a transplant is to be performed-
Nevertheless, there are many centres (including Manchester) who would
probably recommend a MUD BMT assuming that a suitable donor can be found,

As ever. all our thoughts are with you

Yours sincerely,

Dr, R. F. Stevens,
Consultant lIaematologistiOncologist.

Thanks Bob - that is essentially what I ended up doing. Out of the 686 Q's I
had made up to Sat night I only lost 7. These were lost because I was unable
to fill in the blanks in the editted file - ie. too many unknown characters
in the callsign. So I am pretty happy at managing to salvage so much!

Thanks again and as requested a copy to the reflector for information.

Also many thanks to those who replied with similiar suggestions - makes you
feel good that such a helpful group is out there!!

You're right... as you well know.

Watts=(Vrms*Vrms)/ohms

dB(power)=10log(ratio of powers)
dB(voltage or current)=2*10log(ratio voltages or currents)

a 1 S-unit change is:
6dB or factor of 4 change in power.
6dB or factor of 2 change in voltage.

I appologize for the typo...(3dB) All else stands.

Absolutely incorrect. Look it up. Doubling voltage is 6 dB increase of
voltage not 3 dB.

The formula for voltage or current is 20 log ratio, for power 10 log ratio.
A 3 dB voltage change is exactly 3 dB power change.

A simpler thing is to copy the page out of the FCC Rule Book that lists
the countries with which we have 3rd-party agreements and post it near
the rig. After last year, Lowell and I spent some extra time going over
the list before making calls. Basically, I put him on the air during
times when the likely QSOs would be with S. America, where the bulk of
the agreements lie.

I'm afraid that it IS third-party traffic. After treading onto the same
thin ice myself last year, I looked very carefully at the regulations.
Any time you put an unlicensed operator at the mike and he or she speaks
to another ham...it's third-party traffic. This is no different than
putting a foreign student on the line to talk with parents while at
college...which I used to do all the time.

Admittedly, it's a very minor transgression in the Grande Scheme of
Things. But foreign PTT's often get their undies in a knot over such
stuff, to the detriment of resident hams. There are simple remedies for
such things...such as Novice classes!

Bob:

You were doing fine until you said that and fell into the classic hole
about decibels. A dB is a dB is a dB, whether speaking of voltage or
power, if you reference the same impedance. Yes, doubling voltage
quadruples the power, but it is 6 dB in either case.

The annointed can skip the following.

Let's return to basics. The common (base-10) logarithm of the ratio of
two power levels, P1 and P2 is measured in Bels (B), defined by

        B = log(P2/P1)

Since a decibel (dB) is a tenth of a Bel,

        dB = 10*log(P2/P1)

The relationship between power and voltage in a resistor R is

        P = V**2/R, where V**2 is V-squared or V*V

so that, substituting for P1 and P2

        dB = 10*log(V2**2/R2)(R1/V1**2)

If (and only if) R1 = R2 (we are comparing powers developed in the same

resistor or equal resistors), the R's cancel and

        dB = 10*log(V2**2/V1**2) = 10*log(V2/V1)**2

Remembering that the log of a squared quantity is twice the log of the
quantity,

        dB = 10*log(P2/P1) = 10*log(V2/V1)**2 = 20*log(V2/V1)

Log 2 is .3010; log 4 is log 2**2 = 2*log 2 or .6020.

So, if V2/V1 is 2, P2/P1 is 4 and you get 6.02dB in either case.

Just remember: dB's are defined from a power RATIO; all other
relationships are derived. And a dB is a dB.

Before everyone starts flaming me about where there scores are, I would
like to explain. I received a list off 3830 from WZ1R. It only gave me
classes for people as SO. I know some should be unlimited. If you would
just drop me a note I will be glad to move them.

Subject: 3rd party countries

Since I made this up in preparation for a guest op in WPX,
here's the list of countries with whom the US has 3rd party
agreements (compiled from latest ftp version from FCC):
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
V2 Antigua/Barbuda YS El Salvador HP Panama
LU Argentina V6 Federated States ZP Paraguay
VK Australia of Micronesia OA Peru
V3 Belize C5 Gambia DU Philippines
CP Bolivia 9G Ghana VR6 Pitcairn Island*
T9 Bosnia- J3 Grenada V4 StChristopher/Nevis
Herzegovina TG Guatemala J6 St. Lucia
PY Brazil 8R Guyana J8 St. Vincent
VE Canada HH Haiti 9L Sierra Leone
CE Chile HR Honduras 3DA Swaziland
HK Colombia 4X Israel 9Y Trinidad/Tobago
D6 Comoros 6Y Jamaica GB United Kingdom **
TI Costa Rica JY Jordan CX Uruguay
CO Cuba EL Liberia YV Venezuala
HI Dominican V7 Marshall Islands 4U1ITU - ITU, Geneva
Republic XE Mexico 4U1VIC - VIC, Vienna
J7 Dominica YN Nicaragua
HC Ecuador

* Since 1970, there has been an informal agreement between the United
Kingdom and the US, permitting Pitcairn and US amateurs to exchange
messages concerning medical emergencies, urgent need for equipment or
supplies, and provate or personal matters of island residents.

**Limited to special-event stations with callsign prefix GB (GB3 excluded)

Note: US licensed amateurs may operate in the following US territories
under their FCC license: The Northern Marianas Islands, Guam, Johnston
Island, Midway Island, Kure Island, American Samoa, Wake Island, Wilkes
Island, Peale Island, and the US Virgin Islands.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are some additional DXCC countries (listed in the ARRL Countries
List) that count too - they are pretty obvious, e.g. HC8 counts as HC,
and all the VK9s are included with VK etc. With very few exceptions
you can just keep your copy of the Countries List handy, the relevant
countries are marked there.

Of course, with all the other weird, illegal and annoying things going
on during a typical contest, I doubt that anyone is going to be cited
for letting a non-licensed person send a 3rd party message of the form
"59-007". When we had some Girl Sprouts at the W5EHM club shack one
time, we let the kids talk with people around the country, and then
someone called in from Fiji - the kids thought that was neat. I did
too, but officially I should have snatched the mike away and told the
3D2 that we couldn't talk to him. I admit it, I broke the law and
let them talk with him.

Still, if you are going to do a contest with a non-licensed person,
it would be safer not to have them issue CQs, but to share the S&P
sessions. That can still be fun for a non-licensed participant.

For YEARS and YEARS there were those who hadn't received the news. I
would contest at 28,498 and get a lot of "You are out of the band"
remarks... I always told them: "But the frequency is much clearer here."

Gee, Henry, I sure wish I had heard you. Ten meters was sure tough and you
stuck it out. Be sure I was probably running way more watts than you were
and if I was weak at your end, you were probably even weaker at my end. I
only worked a few stateside myself and they were all weak, weak, weak (except
for the locals) and trust me, I bothered EVERY local I heard! Please don't
get discouraged with the best band, the only way from here is up!

Due to several circumstances, I was unable to operate full-time in the WPX SSB.

ONe problem was the feedlines melting down after I installed 2x4CX5000A
amplifier to try to stay competitive...

anyway, I did a little test this weekend. I used a now-defunct callsign I used
to hold (WB1AII - a reasonably rare prefix these days!), and performed the
following experiment:

W4QRO: CQ Contest, W4QRO.
me: Whiskey Bravo One Alfa India India
W4QRO: WB1AII, 591234
me: (nothing)
W4QRO: WB1AII, 591234. Over.
me: (nothing)
W4QRO:
.
.
.

ANd here it got interesting. Read on.

W4QRO: QRZ, W4QRO.
someone else: W8AH
W4QRO: W8AH, 591234 (when W4QRO did not log WB1AII)
W4QRO: W8AH, 591235 (telling me that W4QRO *did* log WB1AII, who never gave
                        a number)

This experiment was tried 42 times over the weekend, with good signals to guys
who were running pretty fast. When I worked Ws, I used GW0AII.

32 times, honesty prevailed. Of those, about 6 specifically said "WB1AII -no
copy" or "Nothing heard".

10 times, the number was incremented for the next QSO. These guys have at least
one bad QSO in their log (and probably others).

I won't reveal their calls. But they can check their logs for these two calls,
and they'll know who they are.

ANd, yes, I broke the rules by signing bootlegged calls. But it was worth it.

A single 3CX1200A7 will put 1500 watts out on RTTY all day long provided you
keep it cool as the mfr says. Any thing beyond that is pretty much gilding
the lily. I suspect most amplifiers that are time-limited for continuous
output are that way because of the power transformer more than the tube.

Same thing happened to us on ARRL_DX/SSB
Scarry scarry stuff that. But what do they have to worry about lord knows
the FCC will never do a thing about it even if they are caught red handed!

Well while we fessin up here you know it is a requirment for FRC that your
station MUST be capable of at least a 10K signal. Now I am a pretty broke
guy and all I could afford to do was build an amp from second hand 811a
tubes from a hamfest.

Damn do you know how many 811a's you gotta heat up to get 10K of output?
All I can tell you is that here at AA3JU we to all the DX contests in the
wintertime sitting outside in our underware and still it gets pretty toasty
round contest time.

I noted a key clicks all over 40M CW tonight. Found the offender sending
number groups at about 45WPM at 6970Khz. Anyone else notice this or is this
a CIA neighbor I didn't know I had?

Oh... The signal were pinning the S-meter. Never seen that on this rig from
home.

Hi Tyler,
I have CT 9.27, ran SS CW and SS SSB M/S and had the same serial number problems
but I figured it was because three pc's were linked. NOT, had the same
problem with only two pc's. The printed log was ok, but ended up giving out
duplicate and incorrect serial number to many stations. Really
un-cool.....hope it gets fixed pretty soon.
