Let's see - I will be in Atlanta for about an hour and a half on Monday
nite. Anyone needing NV600O for WPX should have a decent signal into
the Airport on 147 MHz.

Those really desparate for NV600 should arrange for a waiting HF mobile
rig in the short-term parking lot outside the Delta portion of the
terminal.

I will be flying back via Dallas, so one chance only.

Subject: Rectification as source of interference
Message-ID: <199604190219.WAA04408@paris.akorn.net>

Someone recently made a comment about rectification as a cause of
interference. It is true that this type of interference can not be solved
by any stub or filter. I'm wondering if any one could pass on experiences
with this type of interference?

Dave Pruett (K8CC) and I had a discussion on this subject recently. I think
we concluded our non-shielded CATV hardline could be a source of this
interference. I noted during the WPX SSB contest that my noise on 15M (from
20M) went away when it was raining. May indicate rectification. Just a
guess for now.

Any thoughts from any experts?

Bill

Paul, you can check out my WWW page on the subject:

        http://www.ve7tcp.ampr.org/Software/ct/ct-4port.html

Be advised that if you want multiple ports to share a single IRQ line, then
the SOFTWARE must be written to handle this case. Most software is NOT!

The length of the shorted stub is incorrect in Tony's note for
nulling 3rd harmonic signals of 40M. The correct length is
15'3" for the shorted stub. The open stub length is correct
at 7'8". Some tuning may be required, depending on the
geometry and path length of the Tee connections. (I use
a 1" length of 1.5x1.5 square aluminum tubing and mount
four connectors on the four faces. 1 in and 1 out and 1 each
for the two stubs. Short them together with a low inductance
square of thin copper flashing that is rotated 45 degrees to
the box (remember, a word is worth a milli-picture). ie The
corners of the flashing sit on top of the four center pins of
the connectors.

Typical perfomance of the filter when constructed from RG-213
is about 38 dB at the center of the notch. When the stub
centered in the middle of the 15M band the short/open stub
combo will provide 30 dB or greater attenuation across all of
the 15M band.

I have been sing a Flexport 42 serial board by Quickpath Systems. It =
works great .... absolutely no problems. Four (4) COM ports and two (2) =
parallel ports. You have a choice of ten (10) IRQ levels and eight (8) =
address combinations when configuring the COM ports. I routinely =
operate with 2 TNCs, the radio, Internet and SSTV (WinPix Pro) all =
connected at the same time. I believe the cost is about $80 or so. If =
anyone is interested, let me know and I will dig out info on the vendor =
I ordered from. As I said, the board works extremely well.

The last time we visited this subject, three camps arose:

(1) Why bother breaking up guys? If you put a monetary
value on your time, buy and install Phillystran to a height
of 12 feet above ground. If you want to save some money,
use Philly on the top two sets and go with solid steel
below.

(2) Break 'em up. If you keep your eyes open you can find
good deals on grips, insulators, clips, whatever. Why
bother valuing time? The construction is part of the hobby.

(3) Don't break 'em up. You can always do it later when
you discover which are resonant and which are not. OR,
detune them by adding a few additional feet to change the
resonant frequency.

Me? I'm a Philly guy.

Gregg Norman's disaster this past weekend reminded me of a quotation which
was attributed to Thomas Edison, "If you think you can, or if you think you
can't, your right". Seems to me to apply when we begin to worry about QRO,
antenna heights, best geographic location, etc. When it ain't fun, try
stamps! 73 es see you all in the pile-ups....de George K7WUW

QuickPath has a web site - www.quickpath.com. However, the current price is
about $130. The board gets mentioned in Windows NT Magazine - 4/96 -Chaos
Corner - pg 91

     Hi Bill,

In my experience, bad joints, rectifying or not, cause all sorts of
problems. Any nonlinear joint will create harmonics. Ever turn a
beam and have it touch a guy wire or another wire antenna? Instant
response from all the other stations in the room!

     One war story:

My neighbor in Pittsburgh had terrible TVI whenever I was on the air -
any band, any power, any mode. A highpass filter on his TV didn't
help, reducing my power to 10W helped some. Changing to his rabbit
ears instead of the outside antenna cured it. A trip to the roof
revealed a 20 year old antenna showing the effects of the corrosive
Pittsburgh atmosphere (this was 20 years ago). I wiggled all the
joints in the antenna and the TVI performance improved enough to
convince the neighbor that the source of the TVI was HIS ANTENNA.

By the way, what is "non-shielded CATV hardline"?

Let's not forget that Philly is outside YCCC 150 mi radius, so anyone
using Philly gets their score credited to FRC :.)
