Thanks for the reply to my reflector posting.
So that there is no misunderstanding about what I mean't by the statement 'A
true masochist works high power CW in Louisiana in SS" let me give my
definition of masochist:
A masochist is one who works high power CW knowing that in order to win a
section certificate he must beat a station (W5WMU) and operator who will
come in #1, #2 or #3 in the USA (and probably #1), instead of entering low
power, QRP, or multioperator where a certificate would be easier to win.
Anyone in LA who competes against W5WMU's station with a decent operator
(and especially with a superior op like you or K5GA) qualifies as a
masochist :-)
But high power CW SS is fun and I don't have to win LA in order to have a
good time!! And I could get lucky....maybe you will oversleep during an off
period and miss an hour or two of prime conditions, or Pat's power might go
off etc. etc.
As for the offer of 4 hours training in Lafayette on Friday so I can learn
all the tricks: I am never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, so I will
be glad to take you up on the offer. Maybe I can meet you at Pat's place (
or somewhere for dinner if you like).
As for changing my call.....no way. This was my second choice and it has
proven effective in getting through DX pileups for nearly 19 years. There
are a lot of RR's around, and I sometimes get mistaken for someone else, but
I can live with it.

The Astron supplies are all based on the IC 723 regulator chip. As such,
they're normally pretty noise free.
Two techniques that work beyond the .01 hunt-and-pounce methods are to
try ferrite beads on the wires to the 3771 (or equivalent) power
transistors;
Or best of all (but real expensive) is to replace the internal reference
voltage (which is around 7.01 volts, and I *think* is on pin 6) with an
external, low noise zener diode.
This should reduce your P-P ripple from roughly 10-20 mv to around 4 uv.
At least it did when the company I worked for built the power supplies
for Polarad...

You mean big guns actually come here to LA? :) Sometimes I feel like La is a
rare section. At least by the QSY requests I get.
