Using FSK is preferable to AFSK, in general as it removes the possibility of
getting mic gain levels wrong, RF problems, etc & depending upon the radio
used, can improve receive performance as one can then select narrower CW
filters. My PK-232s at home & in 9M6 are used with MPs with FSK exclusively.

The performance of the stock modem in the PK-232 is pretty darn good & was
better than what could be done in DSP at the same price level at the time, but
that was quite some time ago. I would expect the Timewave DSP upgrade
to be worthy of consideration, but I find I can often print stations who cannot
print me & therefore better "ears" on my end might not make so much sense.
I also work HF digital modes almost exclusively in contests, so for just a few
weekends each year, the upgrade is hard to justify.

I must admit I was with AEA at the time the PK-232 was brought out, so I am
somewhat biased in favor of the original design by K6RFK.
