I assume you are talking about CW.  I would agree with you that a TU, CFM, or R 
should be sent.  But on SSB, I think that just the call is acceptable.  
Information can be conveyed with the tone of your voice, which can't be done on 
CW.  What I can't stand, is when you do ID after EVERY QSO and someone pops in 
with "your call?" or CL? (on CW).   In that case, I will ignore him and 
continue with my run or CQ'ing.
