Hi Glenn;
I cant say that this has surprised me. From late 1995 thru early 2002 I was
one of the QA consultants on what was then the largest statewide public safety
communications system in the USA, Michigan. 182 microwave towers comprised
that 800 Mhz digital trunked (Mototrola Astro with Alcatel microwave) system.
When tower bidding was over, Rohn was an also ran with Pirod the winner of
the entire tower plant. These were, primarily, 320-485 foot self-supporting
towers designed for significant micorwave wind loads, i.e. big capital
investment
$$.
I had heard then that Rohn needed that job very badly to stay afloat, but I
have no proof of that. Neither do I know the percentage of "large vs small"
tower sales comprise their bottom line. I do know that you could purchase a
heck
of a lot of Rohn 45 for the price of ONE of these 485 foot self supporting
monsters ($300K+), hi.
Since then they have lost several other large system jobs to others.
This will be interesting to follow.
