I was at a multi using packet this weekend for the first time ever, and I'm broadly in Eric's corner. I'd add another reason for spotting a lot, though -- Sunday morning, 10 was nicely open but with darned few Non-US/VE on it. I figured that by spotting everyone I was hearing (S&P on 10), given the world-wide propagation of spots these days, I might actually encourage some folks in Europe to get on 10 who otherwise might have stayed on 15. I don't know if it worked or not, but what the heck -- with modern software it's easy enough...
