Actually, most inflation calculators I have found say it's closer to 
$1900.  On the other hand, was there such a thing as a $1.9-2K amateur 
radio (or even a pair) in 1954?  My guess is that the closest approach 
would be a 75A4/32V3 combo, but I don't have any 1954 price information on 
them.

These new humongophone radios aside, I don't think there is much question 
that on a current dollar basis, the price/performance of the current radios 
is miles ahead of anything we could buy back then.  I vividly remember 
scraping pennies together for an RME 4350A at $140.  Would I pay $1000 for 
that kind of performance today?  I don't think so!
