How about both!

I think something you can wear is great. I would bet that the winners would
be happy to pay for a medal or similar.

Someone said that plaques are heavy, expensive to ship, take a long time,
etc.

He is right! And you can't "show them off" unless someone stops by your
QTH.

How about cashing in your old wooden plaques for medals and ribbons? Not
only are they less expensive to ship (not sure about cost), but you can wear
them to your favorite ham event and show off in public.

I have always been impressed with the Soviet style of recognition. They
really seemed to "get it right." Of course, lots of others do a similar
thing.

Couldn't you just imagine yourself at the contest suites with a chest-full
of medals?
And what better photo for a M/M than to show off all of their ops than with
everybody sitting there with a big smile and wearing all those medals of
achievement?

I think I have a couple CQ-M medals around here somewhere. There ARE pretty
cool.
