Paul,
You bring up an interesting point.
If there are no "secrets" left (W2LC's very interesting post
notwithstanding), then why is there such a push to mandate Open Logs?
The only reason I seem to see, this go around at least, is so that we all
"share" information with other contesters, new and old alike.
As I have said privately to a few people earlier... I don't have a problem
sharing information. But I do want to be asked. It may not be much, but I
think of it as a Common Courtesy.
If I am asked, and I often am, I'd say that over 99% of the time (that is,
unless I have a darned good reason not to) I agree and gladly share what I
know or what I've learned.
If I'm curious about something someone else has done, I ask. Maybe I don't
have to, if the log is Open and I know where to find it... but I do anyway.
So why can't I be asked? (And that goes for everyone else, as well)
Is it because some find it too much of a bother to be courteous?

Subject: [CQ-Contest] Public Logs, etc.? Who Cares?
All this stuff about "secrets", whatever is a bunch of gobbligoo.
I may stand to be corrected, but I personally "SHARE" any info, equipment
set-ups,
everything with anyone who wants it. Why? Because giving and giving always
results
in receiving, and often I receive more than I give.
If I let you in on a secret, it helps "you", I do not look upon it as a "I
can't
tell anyone that, they may beat me". If I tell you a "secret" and you use
it, and
it makes you better, that is GREAT, if you beat me at my own game, then I
have to do
better to beat you, right? That's what makes it FUN.
We run a multi operation for SS at K2NNY. Want to know our secret for
consistently
"making the top 10 box"?? It is called having a bunch of guys/gals get
together and
have FUN for the week-end. Set the run station on the band that has the most
stations
and best propagation from our QTH at the time and call CQ SS de K2NNY. Guess
what,
instant pile-up. = instant FUN. The S & P station then goes on other bands
and S & P's.
That gives 2 operators time in the chair, while the rest of us gorge
ourselves with all
kinds of epicurean delights, watch TV, go hunting, etc. If you want our
strategy, and our
logs, just ask, I will be glad to send 'em to you, "unedited". They are
never edited,
when SS is over, we close N1MM, make the Cabrillo file and send it in,
"immediately".
That's our secret.
Oh yeh, this may be the biggest secret of all, we are in a "rare" section,
NNY and that is worth at least 30 db in itself. Hi hi.
