I think that I agree with the first sentence.  I, as a data sample point of 
"1", don't recall that I have ever read the FD rules.

Usually my participation is to do a CW stint at one of the local club sites. 
Then pumped up by the "rush" of a concentrated dose of radio, go home and 
rap off a few more hours of "1D".  During the "at home" part of the weekend, 
I pay zero attention to classes and categories.  I just "exuberantly play in 
the ether" to steal an apt phrase from K1ZZ.

On the other hand, however, I disagree with the second sentence above.  In a 
contest where I intend to "contest", I make a point to explore the rules 
thoroughly, and I expect that others who are "into contesting" do the same.
