Joe,

This reflects upon the importance you assigned to that 'life event'. I
also recall waiting for my envelope to arrive in January 1962... but I
think Half-Heimers has already erased part of my jubilation because I
don't remember it in quite the delicious detail that you do!

I do, however, remember bicycling to my buddies house a couple miles
away and using his RME4350A and DX40 to make my very first CW contact.
That was on 15 meters using the 2-element 15 meter beam mounted on a
recycled utility pole that his dad had installed for that purpose. Oh,
and the yagi was a "plumbers delight" using EMT tubing instead of aluminum!

Subsequently I made a trip to the local ham radio emporium (Electronics
Center in Minneapolis) and saw a used Knight Kit T-50 CW transmitter on
the shelf. I didn't have enough money to pay for it outright, but the
manager, Ward Jensen - WØTLE (sk), allowed me to purchase it on
'credit'... $5 a week for a couple of months. He didn't even know me but
probably recognized the young kids' glean in the eye and enthusiasm, and
was willing to 'risk' $29 to help me get started in ham radio.
