I could really stretch this dim ness some too, being an avid amateur astronomer I also have programs that modify the monitor into nigh vision saving red mode where like a B&W TV is varying shades of black to white, this does black to a light pink, works awesome at the telescope.

I tend to work well with the glow of a small desktop salt lamp slightly
behind my monitors. The lamps usually have a small night light bulb (4
watts or so) and some of the lamp enthusiasts put different colour bulbs in
them.

For the light from the monitors, i use the free F.Lux (or Flux) program
which adjusts the tint of the monitor automatically based on the time of
day. It works on both Windows and OSX. For daytime operation it's set to
6500K but at night I have it automatically adjust based on my location's
sunset to my personal preference.

This has been an interesting topic.

I'm totally odd i guess.
My room has no lights at all. None nada, the only light is from the
computer monitor, the self illuminated keyboard, and the lights of the
radio. nothing else.

Guys,
Interesting about the lighting. K0RF has these typical in-ceiling
overhead fluorescents in his radio room. Those things fatigue my eyes
  and put me
to sleep! So, when I single-op at Chuck's, I bring a long-necked,
adjustable high-intensity desk-lamp--focused on the work at hand--and
turn those
fluorescent-things off. Every time he walks in the room, though, he
turns
them on...so, we have the "Battle of the Lights!" I bring the
high-intensity
lamp for our multiops, too, and it does seem to ameliorate the
fatigue-effect of the overheads--which are always on for those efforts.
Not sure what
it is about overhead fluorescent lighting that affects me--but I know
it's
true. Guess I need to research the color spectrum-thing, too...
