Why would you be "better off" just "leaving the cluster disconnected
altogether"? Seems to me that for the other 50,000 or so participants
who aren't in it to win, spotting is a real benefit. After all, WAC,
DXCC, WAZ, etc. don't care if you're assisted or not.

Pete,
That’s not what I said (or meant). I clearly said that sending spots
does not make you assisted. However, it’s my added suggestion that if
you’re going to enter as an unassisted entry you may be better off
just leaving the cluster disconnected altogether. The rules don’t
require this, of course, but it’s a practice I’ve always used.
There are some purists that take this even further by having no
Internet connection at all in the shack when unassisted.

John, I don't understand this - are you saying that someone might try
to argue that simply being connected to a DX cluster must mean you're
assisted? Strikes me as pretty slim reasoning for such advice, and I
hope that people will ignore it.

The CQWW rules allow for outbound spotting as an unassisted entry.
However, my advice is that if you are unassisted to avoid any use of
the cluster. You’re only inviting the possibility of unintended
access (or worse).

What's the rule for spotting if you are Unassisted?
Be careful about using the Automatically Spot New S&P QSOs
feature. It's not unusual for me to make a mistake, mistype the
call or just be deaf. I always double check the call I've S&Ped,
sometimes after I've worked them. When I'm sure, I'll spot them
manually.

Subject: [CQ-Contest] Don't forget to spot in CQWW SSB
We have all gotten a little spoiled on CW with the RBN, whose 170+
nodes
spot everything. Just a reminder, then - Fort Meade has not yet
released an SSB Skimmer, and until they do (write your Congressperson
and ask!) those of us operating Assisted will need human help.
If you run N1MM Logger, you can turn on
on the Config menu in the Entry Window, and your machine will
automatically spot all the QSOs you log which do not duplicate a spot
(from anyone) within the last 10 minutes. Just remember that this
option is not "sticky", so you need to select it again each time you
restart N1MM Logger.
I'm sure the other popular loggers have something similar. Please
use it!
