Well, for one thing, there aren't a lot of weekends in April and May that
aren't busy -- and I don't just mean from an Amateur Radio standpoint.
Even for those weekends that might work (MIGHT being the operative word), you'd
have to be concerned about other events on nearby weekends -- Hamvention
certainly, other major regional events as well, to say nothing of various
special events and DXpeditions and such that will inevitably crop up..  You'd
be bumping up against a lot of long-tenured events whose organizers might not
be very happy about the effects on their events... and would no doubt be
resistant to cutting back or moving theirs.
And yes, while the weather was uncomfortably if not dangerously hot this
weekend in much of North America -- my club's FD was one of the ones cancelled
due to concerns about the weather -- it is not always so.  There have been
plenty of FD's of comfortable conditions -- and rainy, and cold and miserable,
etc.  It's the nature of the beast, so to speak.
In short:  FD ain't broke.  Don't fix it.

For most of the US, it's uncomfortably hot on FD, not only this year, but
almost every year.  Why not move it to April or May, or even the same
weekend as European FD?
