Another possibility is that Compac is not fully implementing all of
the LPT pins.
I had a Gateway laptop that would not work with a certain model of
keyer interface.  Using a breakout box, I supplied an external
voltage to two of the keyer interface pins (where the LPT port would
provide power) -- This overcame the problem.  The keyer interface
was one that used opto-isolators.  On the other hand, the Gateway
system drove a simple transistor based interface with no problem.
I have a new Dell system that does not require the breakout box,
with the same model of keying interface.
