I too have a CONTEST Voice Blaster and Creative Labs SoundBlaster (8-bit)
system. It a bad hum problem on playback, which improved greatly after I
grounded the PC and rig together with a fat hunk of grounding braid.

A sheilded 1:1 audio transformer might work better. Connect the
interwinding sheild to the rig ground.

I am reminded of the four "rules of VHF construction":

1. Ground everything in sight.

2. If it can't be grounded, bypass it.

3. If it can't be grounded or bypassed, sheild it.

4. If it can't be grounded, bypassed, or sheilded, forget it.
