I use an Icom IC-Q7A shirt-pocket handi-talkie that has 30-400 MHz AM 
receive capability (I think), with a 136 MHz Moxon rectangle for DFing RFI 
sources.  It cost less than $100 and also gives me 2M and 432 transmit 
capability.  Hard to go wrong.  I think 1000-2000 MHZ receive capability 
would be unnecessary for this application.
