The question becomes how much would one spend to repair the old dryer versus buying a new one for $500-$800?

Plus the cost of getting rid of any RFI. :)

I've taken a portable AM radio to appliance stores a few times. My experience has been that the radio produces a loud, constant buzz across the AM band virtually everywhere in the store.

Yep. I keep seeing this advice, and thanks to what are probably hundreds (thousands?) of RF noise sources in almost any brick and mortar establishment, it makes no sense.

One possible approach if you have a store like Costco around you that has a no-questions asked return policy, buy one, try it out, and return it if there's a problem that you can't fix with ferrite chokes on the AC cable.

Gotta get your RF environment quiet so you can hear my QRP signal on 160M. :)
