Hi Shawn:

I think the operative phrase in your question is "lousy
antenna."  Hi.

40 meters is active all day and night with a good antenna.
Now, during the middle of the day skip is a bit short and
most people are at work, so there may be little going on
at times, but I find a couple of QSO's going on even 
during those times.  At night, the QRM may be a challenge
but 40 is hopping.  Heck, from Orono, Europe is only a 
hop, skip and a jump on 40.  You're in a good location
for listening there.  By the way, does Orono have a ham
club?
