Good point.  I believe that the narrowband noise does make it
harder under some circumstances to pick out a weak signal.  For
the moderately strong signal in QRM, or the weak signal in QRM,
the filter may be the only choice, and some filters really do
ring more than others.  The effect you speak of has a large
bearing though, I believe.  I certainly do not like narrow
SSB filters for eliminating noise from SSB signals for the reasons
you describe.  My ears are better at distinguishing signal from
noise.
