[TenTec] Omni Noise

What does a "zipper" sound like?

On my omni6+ , I sometimes hear a amplitude modulated
wow sound. I haven't yet tried to see the audio on a scope.
It sounds like two broadband noise sources beating
together at about a 1HZ frequency. As I recall this happens
on 160 & 80--dont know if it is on higher freq bands.

Depends on what kind of noise you are talking about. When I referred to
the "zipper" noise (from tuning the synthesizer) it sometimes is enough to
make it hard to hear stations on a quiet band, though it happens only when
I tune. In fact, it is loud on any other radio nearby when I tune. I
don't call this a problem of a "purist" myself, but I am certainly not
complaining about the OMNI VI, it stays in my shack, front and center. My
Japanese rig does not have this noise....

It is just a way to figure out where certain noise comes from. It may
still be problematic.

I really like to discuss my favorite rig's strengths AND weaknessess
without hesitation. That is what makes this list fun. As I have said
before, I feel no need to "defend" the Ten Tec line, it stands well enough
on technical grounds as a rig with pretty darned good tradeoffs. No rig
is "perfect" for all operators, but perfection is completely subjective in
this sense - only the operator using the rig knows what is good enough for
himself. I respect that too.
