Anyway, on the speaker thing, not being able to "turn it up" is because the
Omni V, and all modern xcvrs for that matter, don't have the output (watts)
to drive a decent speaker. Those old receivers (Halicrafters,etc.) probably
put out 5-7 watts where these modern xcvrs probably put out 1.5 watts, Ten
Tec included. Take your output audio and feed it into an old pa amp (a la
Radio Shack) that has about a 10 watt plus output, or maybe even an old
stereo rcvr or integrated amp. Feed your xcvr in to the aux. or tape input
and then connect your speakers to the output of your new amp (pa or stereo).
Now you have plenty of output to drive those decent speakers to an
incredible level with a bit of fidelity compared to your original power
supply type speaker. Plus you gain the ability to tailor the audio to
accomodate ones own hearing losses. Make it bassy, lots of treble, what
ever, with the tone controls on your new amp driving the speakers!
As an example, I go a bit overboard. I feed the recieve audio from my Omni V
to a Behringer mixer which acts as the preamp. With the mixer I can use the
built in eq to tailor the sound to my liking. I can also control the final
output of my audio to either headphones or monitors in the shack. The output
of the mixer then feds a 60 stereo power amp. The left channel feeds one
speaker and the right channel another speaker. Can turn one or both off and
just listen to headphones or vice versa. A lot of flexibility. At some point
in the near feature I will have off-air recording capability by taping the
mixer (remember, my receive audio goes through the mixer).
Anyway, just some possibilities.

I use a Minimus 7 hi fi speaker from Radio Shack. This speaker was
recommended for ham use in a QST article, but I do not recommend it for
use with an Omni 5. In fact, I have two of the things; they both behave
exactly the same way. They may be good hi fi speakers (the jury is out
on that one) but I find them insensitive and prone to transient
overload. In other words, don't turn the audio up ...
That MFJ Cleartone sounds a much better bet, but they are not available
over here. Incidentally, I have a Motorola metal jacketed mobile radio
speaker here as well. It is a very poor performer, even on its original
two-way FM radio.
Reading this garbage over, I wonder if my Omni audio is to blame ??
I can never use an audio gain control setting above about 9 AM ...
if I do, its too noisy and prone to distortion. If anyone out there
ever saw similar symptoms - and found a fix, please let me know.
Of course, maybe my ears need fixing after 45 years of exposure to ham
radio.
