You description that the Omni VI sounds good on headphones clearly shows it
is not the filters, but is the speaker. Speakers need to be checked for
warpage from time to time if built in or external. Sometimes an
overtightened mounting bolt will cause the coil to drag on one side.
Speakers are a weak link, or rather the mounting of them in many radios.
Some of the Elecraft kit builders found out you do not overtighten speaker
mounting bolts.
The filtered external speakers such as MFJ's are given good reports. I am
not sure you need much amplification as most receivers have adequate audio
stages.
