I suspect from experience that RF back into the radio is a key
contributor to these problems. From that point, low SWR is not the
total solution. Antennas being close can radiate back into power lines,
keying lines, and a host of other places including the ground system.
Remember, ground DC wise is not ground RF wise. i.e. A standard 19"
rack panel may be grounded at one end but at 144 MHz the other end is
1/4 wave above RF ground. On 20M some 16 ft of wire between the radio
and earth ground puts the radio 1/4 wave above RF ground.
Just a wee bit to consider.
