Sounds like the problems I've had with old Ten-Tecs when the grease in their
PTO's gets old and gummy. Dismantling the PTO, thoroughly cleaning the old
grease off the parts with isopropyl alcohol or (believe it or not) Dawn
dishwashing detergent, then liberally applying new grease before reassembly
has worked in 90% of the PTO's I've worked on. The other 10% had worn parts
that needed replacement.
Ten-Tec will sell you a kit of parts for about $25. They will also supply
instructions for the work. AND they will supply instructions for the
easiest way to remove the PTO from the rig. You probably won't need the
parts but taking the PTO out and apart is right much of a bother so it is
best to have them on hand -- just in case. I would not replace any part
that doesn't appear worn -- check mainly the inside of the bearing race at
the front of the PTO for a groove worn by the ball bearings.
I said it is right much of a bother but it is not daunting. . . You can do
it in a couple of hours, I'd think. Once you have done it once, it is
easier from then on out and you will see why trying to fix the problem from
outside the PTO is futile. Some have tried dripping oil down the shaft --
doesn't work. I even tried putting a Triton on the steam radiator in my
house and succeeded only in slightly melting the speaker grille on the
bottom of the rig.
