Not that this is going to help now but I always take a sniff before I buy
something just to see or over the Internet, I ask if it's from a non smoking
environment. The nose is a great diagnostic tool and can give you a heads up
for certain damage such as burned components and of course lets you know if
the item comes from a SMOKE FREE ENVIRONMENT or not.
Years ago, I bought a Corsair that had been owned by someone who must have
chain smoked in front of the unit and the nicotine was everywhere. The
switches were gummed up inside and took some time to clean. I started with
409 to clean the case, front, and rear panels. I took the chassis outside and
sprayed the insides out with several cans of ZERO residue cleaner being
careful to not spray into cans and coils. As I was spraying, I used a soft
round brush like a pine-top type.
After that I still had some odor so I left the chassis and panels on the
patio table for several days and let them air out. I was amazed but that
seemed to help considerably in fact it made a huge difference. I am not an
Organic Chemistry Specialist but I had wondered if Sun light may have broken
down the Nicotine or whichever component in cigarette smoke that is
responsible for the odor into simpler, non odorous compounds. Maybe we have
an Organic Chemist amongst us who can shed some Light. Excuse the pun.
Anyway, after the Sun light procedure, I sprayed the chassis once more with
Zero Residue spray and cleaned the Chassis with 409 and the unit was just
like it would have been coming from a nonsmoker. I also used Deoxit to clean
the switch contacts. It was lots of work to clean it up and I don't want to
do that again, so I sniff before you buy, just call me nosey...
