Thanks for the reply. That's part of the answer I need.

I know very little about AM operation. and that's the reason for the other
part of this question: Assuming that you did reduce the mic gain to avoid
over-modulation, would a speech processor'ed signal be more readable under
some conditions?

If so, I see another solution to your problem. The software could save and
use different gain settings for with processor and without.
