I have had an IC-7800 to play with over the past few weeks. I have been
making comparisons with the 7800 and my Orion. Here are the filter shapes
for a few settings for both the Orion and 7800. All these settings are with
a roofing filter setting that is much wider than the DSP filter selection.

                 Orion Filters
Filter 6 DB width 60 DB width Shape Factor

100 150 440 2.9:1
250 240 470 1.95:1
500 510 820 1.6:1
1000 980 1160 1.2:1
1600 1580 1880 1.2:1
2400 2360 2500 1.06:1
3000 2930 3270 1.12:1
4000 3960 4280 1.08:1

                 IC-7800 Filters
Filter 6 DB width 60 DB width Shape Factor
50 70 160 2.3:1
100 120 210 1.8:1
250 260 370 1.4:1
500 520 710 1.4:1
1000 1140 2370 2.1:1
1600 1760 3060 1.2:1
2400 2760 3850 1.7:1
3000 3140 3950 1.3:1
3600 3730 4890 1.3:1

You will notice that when using SSB and using a 2400 hertz filter or any
filter in that approximate range, the Orion filters are much sharper. The
7800 will hear over a 3850 hertz range down to 60 db but the Orion is only
2500 hertz with this same filter setting. This helps considerably in
crowded bands. Also I find the AGC in the Orion is able to hold weak
signals at a much more constant volume level than the 7800. The audio
quality is excellent out of either receiver.
