Bill,

I know that Noel had an early beta Orion. It has been back to the factory
and had both hardware and software upgrades to equal one of the current
production units. I look at the 7800 recall as some of the very early units
and we all know that all of the testing in the world only uncovers about 20%
of the problems. When I first got my Orion, I did a beta software upgrade
just before the Ten-Tec hamfest last year. I then hit the User 1 button to
reload my settings and had my screen go blank. I took the rig with me to
the hamfest and Paul had to do a bit of digging until the problem was
uncovered. Until the backup battery was removed, the screen was blank. Now
we have the "Power up with VFOB LCK" combination. If we enjoy being on the
"bleeding edge of technology", we have to be ready to "bleed!" I love my
Orion and the new Orion DVD shows me things that are in the book, but it is
so much easier to understand watching Scott demonstrate the various
features.

Meanwhile the IC-7800 is already experiencing its first product
recall...yet it supposedly has the same update capabilities as Orion. I
wonder why the recall is necessary? It will be very interesting to see
how our perceptions evolve as we see more products with firmware update
capability and compare them to Orion.

                                                         73, Bill W4ZV
